Une typologie du haut-lieu, ou la quadrature d’un géosymbole

Le haut-lieu est un concept trop peu connu ou mal saisi, compte tenu du flou notionnel qui l'affecte et du florilège d'appellations qui y renvoient. Il est difficile de le définir, voire hasardeux d'en déterminer la fonction. Cette absence de définition nuit inévitablement à l'utilisation que l'on peut en faire, alors même qu'il est devenu l'un des concepts-clés de la géographie, en notre époque où le sens des lieux et le sentiment d'appartenance sont fortement questionnés. Sensible à cette difficulté, il nous est apparu pertinent de chercher à la pallier à l'aide d'une analyse étymologique, puis d'une lecture critique et comparative des divers sens qu'on lui prête. Nous tentons ainsi d'en arriver à une définition qui souligne la fécondité et l'utilité du haut-lieu pour faire sens d'un monde de plus en plus complexe, sinon pour mieux l'habiter.The concept of haut-lieu1 is too obscure or so badly understood considering the notional wooliness that affects it and the multiple terms that refer to it, that it is difficult to define it and risky to distinguish its role. This confusion irremediably prejudices the use of this key-concept for geography at a time when the meaning of place and the sense of belonging are greatly challenged. Sensitive to this difficulty, it appeared to us relevant to try to correct it by doing an etymological analysis of haut-lieu and a critical comparative survey of its main meanings. As a result of this analysis, we will be able to propose a definition that emphasizes the richness and the utility of the haut-lieu to make better sense of an increasingly complex world, and perhaps propose a better way to live in it

Plaidoyer de l’imaginaire pour une géographie humaniste

Critique, la géographie humaniste s'articule auprès des sens et essences, et propose un nouveau projet de société certes emballant. Toutefois, elle doit composer avec des impératifs institutionnels et scientifiques qui restreignent ses libertés. Elle est de plus rongée par des obsessions d'identité et de récognition qui nuisent à sa démarche. Aussi, reprenant l'appel à l'imaginaire de Yi-Fu Tuan, nous l'avons examinée au moyen de la science-fiction afin de mieux saisir ses difficultés méthodologiques, ses préoccupations sociales et ses thèmes de recherche. Cognitive, critique, humaniste et libertaire, la science-fiction apparaît comme un adjuvant qui peut épurer la géographie humaine, et même la transcender.Critical, humanistic geography deals with senses and essences, and proposes a new society project which is certainly thrilling. However, it has to deal with institutional and scientific requirements that restrain its liberties. It is also undermined by some identity and recognition obsessions which are very much against its process. So, calling on the use of literary imagination developed by Yi-Fu Tuan, we had a close look at it, using science fiction in order to better understand its methodological difficulties, its social concerns and its research themes.
